If I Had A Love Story - Chapter 11
Chapter
11
My brain was on super computer mode. It was simulating
various versions of "me proposing her" scenes and I felt like Dr.Strange for a
while. Dialogue by dialogue I was busy weaving a script. There were lots of ifs
and buts in them. I wanted to tell that I love her in the most possible
innocuous way that she doesn't get offended.
The dark skies and the clouds loomed all over. The chapatti and paneer combo at the mess had already filled my stomach. Gulping down the lemon juice, I ended my dinner. I phoned Diya and she said that she would be waiting by the Alumni hut. Rehearsing my scripts once again, I did my hair hoping that would make me look good (The struggle to keep up with her beauty was real). I asked Ajith if I looked good some number of times till he told me to shut up. After convincing myself that I looked good. Now I was wondering how I would be shaking him off (Ivana epdi da kalatti vidurathu moment). Lady luck was on my side. He said that he was having a headache and would return back to the room. My face lit up but realising the situation I put up a sad face and said that I would go for a walk alone and told him to take care till I come back (Shobbah, epdilam nadika vendiyatha iruku).
I caught up with Diya and started our usual stroll. We were walking at the front of Vivek audi now amongst the plenty of people in front of it playing PUBG or chatting. Music from her phone lit up the damp atmosphere.
"Er! Diya!" I called out.
Her glistening eyes and creamy cheeks looked at me catching me totally off guard. She brushed the hair that was falling on her eyes aside. All my rehearsed scripts were in flames as I went blank.
"Nothing" I blurted.
She smiled.
She wasn't aware of the powers her smile possessed. It strikes like lightning and leaves me defenseless. It was one of the reasons I fell in love with her (So you see that's where the trouble began. That smile. That damn smile). I had fallen for them countless times and that day was no exception.
Now, having totally forgotten the script that I was supposed to execute, I started scheming my next plan hoping that something would work out. We walked silently enjoying the music.
I stopped short as we were passing by the red building. Diya sensing that I had stopped and turned back. I went upto her, trying not to look at her and I took her hands. I didn't know if it was right or wrong. Then I looked straight into her eyes. Adrenaline was pulsing all throughout my body. Heaving a breath,
"Diya, I'm in love with you"
And there was silence in between us. The only sounds were the chirping of the birds, some people chatting nearby and a song running on her phone at the background. The glorious and historic red building was all there to witness the daring feat I had just performed. Though things didn't go the way I had expected (I didn't know whom to blame - me, her or my poor schemes), the calming climate and the spot still made it a bit romantic. I was still holding her hands petrified waiting for her to say something. She smiled and then again this time broader. She hit me on the head.
"Let's go, it's getting late" she put her arms around my neck shoving me forward with her.
The clouds burst open sending heavy showers. We ran and took cover under the roofs of the red building. There were only few minutes left for her curfew time. She unwrapped her dupatta, dragged me closer and covered our heads with it. One hand holding the dupatta, the other around my neck, she took me with her while I struggled to keep pace with her as I held the other end of her dupatta. Under the refuge of her dupatta, we made our way through along with flurry of other people rushing towards the hostel. She dropped me by the Alumni hut, waved me a bye and disappeared into her hostel before I could say "Bye! Thanks for the lift".
She was a thief and a very good one too having a great
expertise in stealth. She had stolen my heart, invaded into my thoughts and was
possessing my mind all the while and I didn't even know. I stood there drying
myself trying to comprehend the fact that I was going crazy. The rain had
stopped but I was drenched and drowning in her.
