The One He Can't Have

In a new moon day where street lights provided the only illumination, a shady figure lurked in the shadows around the street corner. A guy dropped a girl which seemed to be her house and took off. The lurky shadow watched her plant a kiss on the guy’s cheek, waved him goodbye and went inside her house. The lights in the first floor lit up. Through the window, he could see her tying her hair into a pony tail and then she drew the curtains. The shady figure only left when the lights in her room were put out.

The same shady figure was waiting outside the restaurant. He was wrapped in a black jacket and wore a matching hat. The girl rushed out of the restaurant and looked angry. As she approached him, he put on his glasses and dipped lower supporting his back on the tree. She stopped short of him.

“By any chance, can you accompany me home?”

The guy’s heart beat sped up apparently taken aback by her strange request.

“Err…”

“Never mind, sorry to have bothered you mister”

“Wait! I’ll accompany you” He had to run to catch up with her pace.

“Hi! I am Emma. I live four blocks across the street” She extended her hand to shake. “I know” he wanted to say.

“This is Eric and l live in the cupboard under the stairs” He shook her hands. She laughed.

“You seemed upset. I’m none to ask but I still might ask, if you wanna talk about it” They start walking.

“Do you have a girl friend?”

“Not really”

“Assume you have one. Out of the blue, one day she says that she is going to get engaged to someone else tomorrow. How would you react?”

Eric looked at her eyes.

“I’m sorry”

“Please” She gripped his hand tight. He pulled her towards him and gave her a comforting hug. Then they walked in silence till they reached her home. She did not turn back to say goodbye. Eric stood in front of her house till her room lights went out.

I seek for forgiveness everyday and visit her grave with flowers every week hoping someday I might find the courage to let go and forgive myself.
