The Heart Break
“I’m done. Let’s end this!”
Varun’s mind couldn’t process the message. He took it easy
hoping it was just one of her usual mood swings. He did not bother her. A week
went by. She hasn’t responded to any of his texts. He stared at the single
ticks at the messages he had sent a day before. He sighed. He dialled her
number and there was no answer.
“She’ll come back, don’t worry. In the meantime, get back to
your work”. Long- distance relationships can be truly painful.
2 years back…
Varun was doing his final year of engineering. A team of
students from his college was selected for a symposium that was happening at a
college in Punjab. The HOD announced the team leaving for the event and Varun
happened to be in it.
They arrived at the college and they were being escorted to a
room to refresh themselves. After that, they were on their way to the
auditorium for the inauguration. The college had a lot of buildings and less
greenery. There were few signboards too.
Varun was wearing a blue striped shirt and jeans which he
carefully ironed before leaving for the symposium. He had a notepad and a pen
handy for the competitions and was following the escort to the auditorium when
he felt someone calling from behind. Varun turned back to see two women who
were holding notebooks. They had interrupted Varun’s engrossing discussion with
his partner and he looked at them indifferently.
“I’m sorry, we got lost. Can you direct us to the
auditorium?” One of them asked.
“Yeah sure, Follow us. We are going there.” Varun replied.
They nodded and followed. Varun dropped silent then. They reached the
auditorium and the girls found their way to their group. Varun returned to his
discussion with his partner.
At the end of the day, Varun had emerged victorious and his
college was on stage as he lifted the glorious trophy above his head and the
crowd cheered. Varun and his mates decided to celebrate at the canteen. Someone
was tugging Varun’s shirt and it happened to the two girls he had helped
earlier.
“Hi” one of them greeted. They were wearing matching yellow V-neck
tops. It was the first time Varun had noticed her properly. She was short but
her high heels made up a bit for it. She seemed to have a ton of makeup on her
face but some have faded away leaving a white patch on her left cheek. Varun
did not respond rather he stepped towards her and gently wiped the white patch
off her face with his thumb. She blushed.
“Hi,” Varun said now. They both congratulated him. He nodded with
a smile. As she was about to leave,
“A cup of coffee?” Varun asked. She nodded and left her
friend behind to join him. Her friend found herself lost holding two Pepsi cans
and decided to finish both all by herself.
“I’m Rakshana” She sipped a bit of her coffee. Varun sipped
his. Then they talked.
Varun did not want the cup of coffee to end. They ended up
hours together getting to know each other and it was addicting. They both finally
set out for their colleges after promising to text back once they reach.
Time kept bringing them closer. Calls were exchanged daily and they
wouldn’t miss the chance to meet each other when they had one. Both of them
would wait for the day and sometimes would not sleep. Finally, they were
convinced that they were in love.
“Can you forever be my coffee date?” Varun proposed to her
and she said yes!
They graduated and both went to work in different cities. Time
ran quickly. All was going well until a month ago. You never know when people
change. It just happens.
“You have to convince my parents too!” She said. Varun agreed
to it. He said that he would convince both sides. But she was impatient. She
was worried that her parents would marry her off to someone else. Then the
intensity of these talks increased and she would talk stuff about her parents’
preferences and marriage even at 2 in the morning.
“You seem like you can convince your parents by yourself”
Varun joked one day. She was somehow pissed by it and shut out Varun for a
week. Varun had a tough time managing both his work and her mood swings.
After a week, she apologised and said that they would start
over fresh. But it did not end there. Varun realised that she needed some space
but she would not come over when he offered to take a break.
Things started going haywire and Varun tried everything to
make her feel secure, only in vain. There were fights for even the tiniest of
things. She would ask him to stop talking to her only to come up later to bring
up the fact that he doesn’t have the time to talk to her. When she was unable
to articulate her thoughts properly, what could Varun, who was almost 100 miles
away from her do? He could only wish that he had mind-reading powers.
Now…
Was what he was going through, worth anything? Did he still feel the same way he felt when he was with her for the first time? Did he want the cup of coffee to not end now? Varun was struggling to find answers. But he knew what he had to do. He took a leap of faith.
