Beyond the Twilight

 Beyond the Twilight

The wind was starting to go crazy, making the door creak. The eyes of the full moon gazed through the open windows of Dr.Lucius’s laboratory. Dr.Lucius could sense the change in air as it became thinner and colder suddenly. The creaking door stopped. A dark shadowy figure stood in the entrance.

Dr.Lucius did not turn back but was focused on his experiment. A computer beside him was running calculations that seemed like analysis of a lab test.

“You are back so soon,” he said, still focused on the microscope.

The figure then moved swiftly and silently, in a most inhumane way. The next moment, it was standing beside Dr.Lucius, bending down to see his work. Dr.Lucius startled dropping his pen and almost fell off his chair.

“Damn it, Raphael”

The doctor now saw his face at close for the first time. His crimson eyes, jet black hair and a face that bore the timeless handsomeness of a forgotten era. His lips, tinged with a hint of sardonic amusement, parted to reveal sharp, pearl-white fangs.

“Then doctor, you have decided to accept my proposal”, his voice a silky whisper that would send shivers down one’s spine.

Dr.Lucius stood facing Raphael, the doctor was an inch taller than Raphael but Raphael’s physique intimidated him. Dr.Lucius’s heart was beating fast as he tried to calm down.

“I am analyzing your blood and DNA, it’s not like I run into vampires everyday, do I?”, his heartbeat was slowly coming back to normal.

“You do understand what’s at stake, Dr.Lucius?” Raphael switched to a serious tone.

“The vampire race is at the brink of war with humans which would ultimately result in the near extermination of humankind and would mark the end of its reign over this world, Yeah! I remember that. I also take it that you did not come here to test my memory capabilities.” Dr.Lucius leered at Raphael.

“We vampires used to feast on human blood until…” Raphael paused.

“...your so-called advancements in science and technology corrupted and polluted your blood, and then we started to despise your blood.”

Dr.Lucius couldn’t tell how old Raphael is, to him it looked like he was just in his late 20s and healthy, but of course vampires don’t age. A sudden revelation hit him - Raphael was bitten somewhere in his late 20s, he had his whole life ahead of him.

“We began to feed on and adapt to other creatures’ blood. It was not very long until their blood became polluted because of the chemicals you have been releasing into the air. Every 1 in 10 creatures that we feed on has polluted blood.” Raphael sighed.

“I thought you said vampires aren’t vicious and are very intelligent. But from what I understood that vampires are - we ain’t getting the blood we want, let’s play genocide” Dr.Lucius chuckled.

“You know, someday your sense of humor might kill you” Raphael said indifferently. Dr.Lucius remained unshaken.

“We respect humans, we were all one long ago. We don’t go on killing sprees for human blood. But vampires can't exist without humans, we need your blood to survive and proliferate. That's where the Council of Vampires have marked the remaining pure blooded humans who will be the only ones spared in this all out war. That will be the dawn of the Vampire's Era” Raphael revealed to Dr.Lucius’s horror.

“Why choose me, one of the human race who are the root cause for all your problems?” Dr.Lucius questioned Raphael.

Raphael smiled. The smile seemed to hold an otherworldly wisdom, revealing the weight of the centuries he had witnessed.

“Because you are the only one who could set this right - Dr.Lucius D. Law, the genius geneticist, biochemist and doctor”

“Flattery and full names won’t get you anywhere Raphael Santiago. Did you get me what I asked?” Raphael handed him a vial that had a shiny glittery substance inside it. Dr.Lucius carefully placed the vial in a holder on his desk.

Beep. Beep. Beep. The computer lit up processing a dashboard. Dr.Lucius shifted his attention to his computer. He focused on the computer screen intently jotting down some numbers on his notepad.

“I ran multiple tests on your blood sample and a human blood sample that you provided” he stood up. “The tests returned alarmingly high levels of silver in your blood. The human blood sample also had slightly higher silver levels than normal. The capacity of your bodies to withstand silver seems to have been lowered drastically thus developing a distaste for most human blood” Lucius explained.

“So… it can’t be fixed?” Raphael looked concerned.

“I am unsure why and how the silver amounts are high but a dose of Glutathione shouldn’t stop you from what you call it…?” Dr.Lucius stopped pretending to be thinking.

“Ah! feasting on human blood” he exclaimed and got back to work. Raphael clearly pissed and got hold of the doctor. Dr.Lucius felt the chillness seeping into him in Raphael’s freezing touch and then his shoulder went numb all of sudden. The last thing he could remember was Raphael grabbing his throat. He then blacked out for hours.

Dr.Lucius opened his eyes to see the ceiling of the lab and sunlight beaming into his eyes causing him to flinch. He got up, blinked his eyes and went straight to a bathroom mirror. He was looking for bite marks on his neck but there weren’t any. He rushed back to his table and rummaged through the things on his desk. The vial was missing and it contained a rare elixir from the Dark mountain. Raphael promised the elixir if Dr.Lucius was able to purify the human blood. He cursed his bad luck and went back to his research. He still had Raphael’s blood and he needed to perform more experiments before its end.

The air became chill and Dr.Lucius sensed the temperature going down. He turned back to see three cloaked figures standing at the ingress. He recognized one of the three faces in broad daylight, recognizing the jet black hair and crimson eyes.

“Hello, Dr.Lucius! We came back to thank you” Raphael smirked. The three of them approached the doctor, baking in the sunlight from the window. Dr.Lucius watched in horror as they walked towards him unscathed in the sunlight. He was completely down, paralyzed with fear and managed to blurt out the words “What have you done Raphael?”.

Dr.Lucius woke up inside a buried casket. He touched his neck to find a bite mark. He could not hear or feel his heartbeat. A sudden urge for blood consumed him and he started thumping the casket to break out but could not. He was a thousand meters below the ground level. Blood then oozed from his eyes. He was crying.
